This book tells the story of and shows some of the art of J. R. Bagshawe, who was born in Whitby and was one of a talented group known as the Staithes group of artists. Staithes was the main focus of his art.

In 1918 Shoesmith left a career at sea to devote himself to painting, and much of his art celebrates the ships of the Royal Mail Line, for whom he produced a vast amount of paintings and sketches for advertising purposes, but perhaps the pinnacle of his career was working on the interiors of the Queen Mary.
