COASTAL SHIPPING, December 2006

The "Coaster of the Past" in this issue is the Pass of Melfort, dating from 1926. "Port Panorama" does not feature a port at all! Rather it looks at coastal vessels passing through the spectacular scenery of the Sound of Mull. "Standard Coasters" makes a welcome return and reviews the 1500dwt type from the Hermann Sürken shipyard in Papenburg. This issue looks in detail at the latest news from Kent, from Scotland and from the east coast of England. There is a feature article about coasters in the River Thames during the 1960s. He was present for the launch of one of these and just missed the launch of another. We have a longer-than-usual “Tanker Traffic” article as there has been much news from the tanker world in recent weeks.

For once, “Name Check” does not include many British vessels – but there is news of a Norwegian coaster which has been bought by a Scottish transport company. As always, we have news from around the world in various other sections of the magazine.
