Beginning in North Wales, the photographs in this book take us along the railway system of Wales with an emphasis on the unusual. Not only are many of the locations unusual, but also the authors have managed to capture many unusual workings. All 101 photographs are in colour, and they depict scenes from the 1980s onwards. With so many splendid rural landscapes on offer, the locomotives and trains can sometimes seem almost incidental, but it is the railway scenes that provide the central theme for the book. Industrial settings, too, offer a backcloth for many images, and there are a host of reminders that the last two decades have seen manufacturing industries in Wales reduced to a mere shadow of their former and recent prominence. Coal, iron and steel, cement, oil - all have seen huge cutbacks during the period covered by this book.
