The peninsular & oriental steam Navigation Company (P&O) was founded by Brodie McGhie Wilcox and Arthur Anderson during a period of intense international change, just as steam– driven ships were beginning to replace traditional sailing vessels. Over the next 180 years the name P&O became synonymous for speed, reliability and good taste.

This book follows the fortunes of P&O Ferries. Normandy Ferries , Southern Ferries, Townsend Car Ferries, Thorsen Car Ferries, which all later became part of European Ferries and then in 1986 the company was taken over the P&O Group. Following major re-organisation in 2002 the Uk giant was re-branded as P&O Ferries.

Today they are the UK's largest ferry company operating a fleet of 20 ships and more than 30,000 sailings a year from Dover, Hull, Liverpool and Cairnryan to Europe and Ireland, Franc, Belgium and the Netherlands. In 2001 the largest ferry in the Group entered service, the Spirit of Britain on their 90 minute crossing between Dover and Calais. In 2015 P&O Ferries carries 10 million passengers, 1.6 million cars and 2.2 million freight units on their seven routes.
